The basic working principle of a shield tunneling machine is that a cylindrical steel component moves forward along the tunnel axis while excavating the soil. The shell of this cylindrical component is the shield, which provides temporary support for the excavated but unlined tunnel section, bearing the pressure of the surrounding soil layers, and sometimes also withstanding groundwater pressure and keeping groundwater out.
